GK and I spoke for about an hour. About her life. She was born in 1909.
She had a doll. It was bought, but she had to make the clothes if she wanted her doll to wear clothes. She remembered her folks talking about WWI, but she didn't really pay much attention, as children tend...especially when there are more important matters - such as dress-making and cookie-baking. Her sister J (the middle child, and about ten years older than she) was jealous of her. J was the type that was "hard to get along with." (GK's words). J was a loner. She died an "Old Maid," (also GK's words) sometime in the late twentieth century. GK was in the Girl Scouts. J worked at a factory. GK went to Business College and learned shorthand and did office work in her middle and late years. J kept working at the factory and died as an Old Maid. GK's grandmother paid Business College for her.
GK says that she has been married three times:
- To a German. They lived in Massachusettes. They were together for a long time until his death. He suddenly got sick (a "pimple" on his neck) and died a short while later. GK said that, "Doctors are stupid. I don't mean doctors are stupid. I mean that doctors treat you like you're stupid. You. YOU are stupid." She shook her head when she said this.
- When she was 29 (or thereabouts), she married N's father. " A happy-go-lucky fella." He spoiled N. N was also the type that what hard to get along with. But she says that J and N are not the same type of people. "Oh NO! Very different, those two." N's father and GK (and N, aged 3) moved to Florida because they liked what they saw when they were vacationing. They divorced.
- She married B. They were together until his death in the 1980's.
